Wells Fargo: Remove Unwanted Accounts and Their Transactions
If you connected a client’s Wells Fargo login and extra accounts were included (personal, legacy, or unrelated accounts), you don’t need to restart onboarding or rebuild the books.
Due to a limitation with Wells Fargo’s Plaid connection, unwanted accounts may still appear in Digits. The cleanest fix is to stop Digits from syncing history for those accounts—this removes their transactions from the Ledger and prevents them from impacting reporting.
Disable Historical Sync for the Unwanted Accounts
Setting an account’s Historical Data Sync to a future date tells Digits to pull zero transactions for that account.
Step 1: Edit the Connection
Go to Firm Dashboard → Client → Connections
Locate the Wells Fargo connection and click Manage
For each unwanted account:
Find Historical Data Sync
Change it from All to a future date (example: January 1, 2050)
Click Save (repeat for each account)
Step 2: Remove the Opening Balance
Go to Accounting → Ledger → All Transactions.
Use the date picker (top left) to set a wide range (for example, Last 10 years) so the earliest entries are included
Find the Opening Balance entry. It’s usually a Journal Entry or Pay In labeled Owner’s Contribution (or similar)
Toggle to Edit mode at the top of the screen
Click the trash can (top right), then confirm Delete.
What happens next?
All existing transactions from those accounts are removed from the Ledger
Those accounts will no longer impact cash balances or reports (including the P&L)
You can keep moving forward—no reset required
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the accounts still show up in Digits?
They may still appear under the Wells Fargo connection, but with no transactions syncing, they won’t affect the Ledger or reporting.
Do I need to delete and reconnect Wells Fargo?
Usually, no. The Historical Data Sync approach is the quickest way to clean things up without restarting.
Are those transactions “visual only” or are they in the books?
If transactions were imported, they are part of the Ledger until removed. After you apply the steps above, Digits removes them so they no longer affect your books or reports.
